Oshougatsu, New Year coming

We are preparing to welcome a new year.

Kagami mochi. Main Kagamimochi placed next to Kamidana (Shintoh alter).
The ship is for Japanese main 7 gods to travel to ours.
An orange, Dai-dai in Japanese means "the generation to a generation", wishing the family prosperity.

Small Kagami-moch are for each rooms including the kitchen and the bathrooms.

Place them like this.

This is pine branch for Matsu Kazari, for gate or front door's decoration.

for car too.

We are preparing Osech, dishes welcoming a new year.
This is Kazunoko (herring roe). To exclude salt, we put them in water (with bit salt in the water)

Kimono everyday, everyday,,,,

Update some of my everyday's Kimono pics.

This is my favorite cotton Kimono. Pink beige with small Sashiko dots.
I found this Kimono will go with variety of Obi.

Summer wool. I like this yellow Obijime. The apron, girly preppy apron. Lovely. But this apron is bit too short for Kimono.

I did great erinuki !!

Clipped the last clasps of Tabi. I read about this in a book. Early Shouwa , this style was so edgey. Clipping the last one and fold ankle cloth down (wrong side shown).
I remember that the day I took this photo was very hot and humid day. After taking shower, I tried the tabi folds.

But I still love look through Etsy to find something lovely with Kimono.

My new fan for Japanese classic dance Nichibu

The first year has passed since I started learning Japanese classic dance Nichibu. My first performance was on the last Sunday and for that, I bought a new fan for myself.
Because my Sensei (master) is Hanayagi , I bought Sakura Cherry blossom fan. Very lovely!!!
My husband bought me the Sensu (fan) case.

It is bit difficult for me to attend all classes sometime. But I would love to continue and enjoy this new challenge.

Zouri's heel

My favourite zouri have been worn out, as I wear this pair so often. You can see "worn out" on zouri's body too.

You can purchase zouri's heels at Zouri store. 200-300-yen for one pair or two.

Inserting something like needle or sharp stick between the heel and Zouri's body. And take the old heel off from Zouri.

Place the new heel on right place ( as you can see them its mark on it.) and pin on the Zouri.

Finito~!

new scrunchy HIDARI-UMA

The title of this scrunchy "Hidari Uma" is written as 左馬 in Kanji Chinese Character. This literary means "left horse", or meaning reversed letter (or character) of "horse",  as you can see the Kanji (Chinese Character) 馬 in reverse in the photo.

This is from Japanese old traditional belief , a kind of  superstition. Yes, as always.
And also, this is famous as Japanese craft of Shougi (Japanese chess)'s playing piece originally Tendou, Yamagata Japan.

This reversed "Horse(character)" is loved as lucky charm, because
1. Horse never fall down to left, but always to right. So, the horse which forwards left is believed as "NEVER FELL DOWN". Also, we ride on a horse from his right to avoid his falling down.
Actually, I do not know these are right.

2. Also, horse is always taken by man. Now "reverse"  these two objects. A man is taken by horse = horses bring many people = business welcoming many people prosperously.

3. Horse (U MA) in Japanese. Reverse these two letters, MA U is same sound of verse MAU (Dance). Japanese Mai is usually for ritual and for congrats. So, reversed U MA is lucky.

4. And no one in your right = you are No.1

The fabric of Hidariuma is from a left of Obi fabric. The piece of fabric I used for this scrunchy has Hyoutan too. Hyoutan (gourd)is also believed as lucky charm, as lucky pot.

So now, how many people get "Ah-ha" ?
Hyoutan (Gourd) and horse?
Do you know Japanese old saying Horse (Koma) from Hyoutan Gourd?(Koma is currently expressing "Japanese chess's piece" too.)

This means; Unexpected lucky thing happens unexpectedly.

I wish this scrunchy will bring you many fortunes!

Arigatou!

Craft Desk top today

Lotus roots, "RENKON" in Japanese, is popular Japanese motif. We have boiled Lotus Roots in Osechi (A New Year Dish, a kind of ceremonial dishes). Lotus Roots have a hole through long roots. You might be able to look through the other side, maybe future? That is why Japanese loves lotus roots as lucky symbol. I feel Japanese is such a big optimist. They always look for "lucky" in somethings (maybe in everything!)

I drew Renkon Lotus Roots by freehand and

stitch them on blight pink cotton fabric.

However, I feel this fabric is easy to be discolour by washing, so I will wash once or twice before sewing.

I washed my Yukata and linen Kimono

I finally washed my Yukata and linen Kimono.

Actually, I did this BY MACHINE WASHING~~~~!!!
Putting each of them in laundry nets, just push the "start" button with a kind of "braveness".

Yes, as imagined, they were finished in really crinkled.
But do not worry! Pat them very carefully they will be fine.
Hang them by laundry poles as the top photo.

After dried under sunny sky (but being in shades is preferouble),

Fold them carefully.
And let's keep them in TATOUGAMI (as some Japanese people believe the 畳紙 as Tatoushi. But Tatougami is correct. Actually I have called them Tatoushi before ;-))

I am tiding up my summer Kimono and Yukata gradually.

Summer has gone?

Autumn Ohigan (a religious event ) starts from Sept 20th for a week.(Spring has Ohigan too.) And Japanese says "Heat of Summer and Coldness of Winter will go when Ohigan comes.

And as old saying, I feel cold in the
early morning these days.I decide to put away summer Kimono and Summer Obi.

Spraying and hang them in shades.... fold neatly and put them in a box.

Akinasu (egg plant of Autumn)

Japanese old saying "Do not give Akinasu (Eggplant in Autumn) to your daughter in law" have two meanings we say.

1. Egg plant fruited in Autumn is very delicious. And the mother'n' law do not want to give it to her provoking daughter in law.

or

2. Because Egg plant fruited in Autumn has something wrong with young ladies. I forgot it, but might be cool her body? or something like that. So, the mom in law is taking care of her daughter in law.

Anyway I love egg plant.

Kokeshi doll

I am believing the most of Japanese girls have some memories with Kokeshi doll.
Might be gifted from her parents? her grandparents? or anyone else. And I'm believing this too that I am not the only one who are scared of Kokeshi.

But anyway I love it now thanks to many of Japanese Kokeshi zakka.

This is my first kokeshi work. I am very happy with this.
